Go Green and Reap the Benefits

Choosing to use low carbon, energy efficient and renewable energy products brings a number of benefits to businesses. Upgrading operations and capital equipment to be more carbon efficient could save you a considerable amount of money off energy bills. Also, new legislation like the Carbon Reduction Commitment and tighter building controls means that businesses must be prepared and consider investing in new technology. Further benefits include better reputation in the supply chain giving a competitive edge, improved employee retention and recruitment, as well as a number of benefits to the environment.

QUEST works with the Carbon Trust, a non-profit making organisation supporting the move to a low carbon economy.

The scheme offers support to both private and public sector companies to support cutting carbon emissions; help save energy and to commercialise low carbon technologies. They contribute to the key UK goals of lowering carbon emissions by stimulating action through the development of low carbon businesses, associated jobs and increased energy security.

The Carbon Trust offer specialist support in number of different ways, such as through the ECA energy scheme (Enhanced Capital Allowance), which helps businesses to invest in energy-saving equipment through accelerated tax relief.

As a supplier, QUEST supports the Carbon Trust by offering a number of products that are eligible for ECA, by offering advice and guidance to our customers and applying for finance on their behalf (or help them through the application process).

Enhanced Capital Allowances

Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) is a way for a business to improve its cash flow through accelerated tax relief. The scheme, which is managed by the Carbon Trust on behalf of the government, is designed to encourage businesses to invest in energy efficient machinery and plant. A list of products that are eligible to Enhanced Capital Allowance as part of the scheme are documented on the Energy Technology List (ETL) which is maintained on the Carbon Trust’s website.

An ECA works by allowing a business to write off the whole of the equipment cost in the first year against taxable profits. This will have a positive impact on cash flow and thus make purchasing energy-saving equipment a more attractive prospect, as it usually carries a price premium against other less efficient products. These cost savings are in addition to the other benefits purchasing energy efficient products bring, such as increased efficiency, lower energy bills and reduced payback periods.

QUEST supply a number of energy saving products listed on the ETL that qualify for an Enhanced Capital Allowance, such as energy efficient lighting and drives. We are also on hand to help and guide our customers through the process of applying for an ECA with the Carbon Trust. If you need any more information on how Enhanced Capital Allowances could benefit your organisation or how QUEST can help you further please contact us.

Intelligent Voltage Optimisation

It is a well-known fact that reducing the voltage supplied to electrical equipment will reduce the overall power consumption. By using Intelligent Voltage Optimisation (IVO) technology, power consumption can be reduced by up to 12%, providing savings on your electricity bills of close to 25%.

Electricity generating companies across Europe provide fluctuating levels of voltage to their customers. These range from around 207v through to 253v creating a lot of wastage (as most electrical loads are capable of running at 220v). The fluctuating levels reduce the lifespan of the equipment and increase maintenance costs.

To increase the lifespan of your equipment - while reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs - we recommend the installation of IVO technology to your premises.

The technology monitors the incoming voltage (over 3,000 times a second) and calculates any required changes to ensure a stable level of energy. Cost and energy savings are maximised while reducing your carbon emissions.

This technology is perfect for businesses that use

  • refrigeration units
  • air-conditioning loads
  • manufacturing equipment
  • fluorescent and tungsten lighting (warehouses, supermarkets etc.)

Data centres and IT infrastructures will also benefit from IVO technology by improving the power quality coming in to the business, enhancing the life of the equipment.
