EICR Testing: Why Electrical Safety Is Becoming Increasingly Important for UK Businesses

As commercial and industrial facilities continue to expand, introduce new machinery and increase electrical demand, ensuring existing electrical installations remain safe and suitable for continued use has never been more important.

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) provides a detailed assessment of the condition of an electrical installation, helping businesses identify potential safety concerns, deterioration and defects before they develop into more serious problems.

For factories, warehouses, schools and commercial premises, regular fixed wire testing and electrical inspections are an essential part of maintaining safe and reliable electrical infrastructure.

Electrical Installations Change Over Time

Electrical systems are rarely left untouched throughout the life of a building. New machinery, additional distribution boards, changes in building layouts and increased electrical loads can all place additional demands on existing infrastructure.

Over time, electrical components can deteriorate, connections may become loose and protective devices may no longer be suitable for the installation they serve.

An EICR assesses the condition of the installation against the relevant safety requirements of BS 7671, identifying defects and providing recommendations where improvements are required.

More Than Just a Visual Inspection

A thorough commercial or industrial EICR involves considerably more than checking distribution boards and completing paperwork.

Depending on the installation and agreed inspection scope, fixed wire testing can include:

  • Inspection of distribution boards and switchgear
  • Assessment of earthing and bonding arrangements
  • Insulation resistance testing
  • Continuity testing
  • Earth fault loop impedance testing
  • RCD testing and verification
  • Inspection of protective devices
  • Circuit identification and verification
  • Assessment of electrical connections and equipment condition
  • Identification and classification of electrical defects

The findings are recorded within an Electrical Installation Condition Report, providing a documented assessment of the installation’s condition.

Why Planned Testing Matters for Industry

For manufacturing facilities and other operational businesses, unexpected electrical failures can result in significant disruption.

Electrical testing provides an opportunity to identify issues before they contribute to equipment failure, unplanned shutdowns or potentially dangerous conditions.

Planning inspections around production schedules also allows testing to be completed in stages, helping minimise disruption to daily operations.

The appropriate inspection frequency depends on the type of installation, its use, condition and previous inspection findings. A three-year interval is commonly recommended for industrial installations, although the required interval should always be assessed for the individual site.

Understanding EICR Results

Following an inspection, any identified defects are classified according to their severity.

  • C1 – Danger Present: Immediate action required.
  • C2 – Potentially Dangerous: Urgent remedial action required.
  • C3 – Improvement Recommended: An improvement is advised.
  • FI – Further Investigation Required: Further investigation is needed without delay.

Understanding these classifications helps businesses prioritise electrical remedial works and make informed decisions about maintenance and future investment.
