Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)?

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a detailed assessment of the condition and safety of an existing electrical installation. It identifies potential hazards, deterioration, defects and non-compliances with the current requirements of BS 7671. QUEST Electrical carries out EICRs across industrial and commercial premises, providing clear reports and recommendations for any remedial works required.

How often should a commercial or industrial property have an EICR?

The recommended frequency depends on the type of premises, operating environment, installation condition and previous inspection findings. Many commercial installations are inspected at intervals of up to five years, while industrial environments may require more frequent inspections, often every three years. The appropriate interval should be determined by a competent person following an assessment of the installation and its use.

What does an EICR inspection and test include?

An EICR involves visual inspection and electrical testing of the installation, including distribution boards, protective devices, circuits, earthing and bonding arrangements. Testing can include insulation resistance, continuity, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD operation, where applicable. QUEST Electrical undertakes thorough inspections using calibrated test equipment, with recorded results and clearly identified observations.

What do C1, C2, C3 and FI codes mean on an EICR?

Observations identified during an EICR are classified according to their severity:

  • C1 – Danger Present: Immediate action required.
  • C2 – Potentially Dangerous: Urgent remedial action required.
  • C3 – Improvement Recommended: Improvement advised but not necessarily required for a satisfactory report.
  • FI – Further Investigation: Additional investigation required without delay.

An EICR containing C1, C2 or FI observations will normally be classified as unsatisfactory until the relevant issues have been addressed.

Can an EICR be carried out without shutting down our business?

In many cases, an EICR can be planned around normal business operations to minimise disruption. However, certain electrical tests require circuits or equipment to be safely isolated. QUEST Electrical works closely with clients to arrange planned shutdowns, phased testing and suitable access, particularly within operational factories, warehouses and commercial facilities.

What happens if our EICR identifies electrical defects?

If defects are identified, QUEST Electrical provides a detailed report outlining the observations, their classifications and recommended actions. We can then prepare a quotation for the necessary remedial works, helping clients prioritise safety-critical issues. Once completed, the appropriate certification or documentation can be provided to confirm the work undertaken.

EICR Compliance

Regular Electrical Installation Condition Reports are essential for maintaining a safe electrical installation and demonstrating compliance with current electrical standards.

An EICR identifies deterioration, damage, wear, defects and departures from BS 7671, enabling businesses to rectify issues before they become a safety risk or cause costly downtime.

At QUEST Electrical, we carry out EICRs in accordance with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and Guidance Note 3: Inspection & Testing, providing clear, accurate reports and practical recommendations to help you maintain a safe and compliant electrical installation.

Regular EICRs help businesses meet their legal responsibilities, reduce the risk of electrical failures and provide confidence that electrical installations remain safe for continued use. Our experienced engineers deliver comprehensive inspections, practical recommendations and professional remedial services to help you maintain compliance and protect your people, premises and operations.
